Chris Coombes is a visual artist based in London.

Working across painting, photography, print, video and design-inflected objects, his practice explores how institutions and aspects of everyday life shape collective identity and visual culture. His paintings often centre on spaces, products or images that suggest aspiration, authority or familiarity. Elsewhere, he draws from the visual language of public and commercial life, using mimicry and repetition to explore how belief and belonging might be shaped.

Recent works include a painting of Henry VIII viewed through the lens of institutional figuration, and Daily Themes to Try with Friends and Family (2022), a printed booklet offering a week of gently directive prompts that begin with openness and encouragement before gradually shifting toward supervision and control. An ongoing project, Serotica, is a musical conceived as Tate Modern neared completion in 1999–2000, tracing its rise through the choreography of British pop.

Alongside his studio practice, Coombes has initiated Modern Britain, a parallel platform where products explore the boundaries between fine art, design and merchandising. The website functions as both distributor and artwork.
