New Property. 2017
lm6a Project Room presents new work by Chris Coombes, the first of a series of solo exhibitions. The show features painting, drawing and objects to consider ideas about acquisition and change.
'New Property' is taken from the subject line of estate agent emails promoting luxury Barbican flats. Using the featured photographs as source material the paintings and drawings are an attempt to bring this prescribed lifestyle closer. Unlike typical domestic scenes no people are shown, the images exist purely to present the property in its best light to encourage a sale.
The artwork has been made in response to the property newsletters as they are received. This means for each work to be made there are several steps in the process starting with the decision of the landlord to rent out or sell. The finished work is then posted to Instagram tagged with the Barbican location and building name. In this way each image and its sense of private frustrated ambition joins a public, aspirational narrative.
